About Ounjian Foundation

Ounjian School

School No. 21 in one of Gyumri’s poorer neighborhoods was destroyed in the earthquake of 1988. The school was operating in temporary facilities in very poor condition. In October 1998 Dr. Ounjian made an exploratory visit with his close friend, Simon Y Balian, who was actively implementing projects in Armenia. After visiting School No. 21 in Gyumri and witnessing the conditions, Dr. Ounjian immediately decided to rebuild the school and provide the hundreds of students with a building and facilities that would be conducive to proper education.

When he returned home, he established the John O. Foundation and with Mr. Balian’s leadership immediately started planning the reconstruction of the school. The project was completed in time for the beginning of the 2001-2002 school year. The opening ceremony was held in September 2001 with President Robert Kocharyan and other dignitaries present, including a large group of Dr. Ounjian’s admirer’s and friends from the United States.

The school was equipped with all the necessary resources to provide an excellent education. Dr. Ounjian, in a unique and unparalleled dedication, kept his active involvement with the school, visiting several times a year. He regularly makes sure that it is properly maintained, the resources are upgraded and that the teaching is up to excellent standards. He personally spends time in the classroom both to teach and inspire the students.

The School is equipped with a library, science and computer laboratories, a gymnasium and auditorium.
